Worst Tornado in US History Slams The South

150 Tornado's and Counting

Take a deep breathe and pray for those in need throughout the South at this time. With close to 250 deaths so far, reports consider this as one of the worst Tornado outbreaks in US history. I grew up a few hours from where much of the destruction happened in Alabama and can still remember how bad things can get in the Spring with Tornado's down there but this is simply insane.

Governor Bentley reminded reporters on Thursday that Alabama has a long history of deadly tornadoes. The state saw the greatest number of casualties in the 1974 "Super Tornado Outbreak," which killed 318 people across the US and Canada, with 77 perishing in Alabama. He added that "incessant" TV and radio coverage of the storm system had residents on high alert all day Wednesday. Most Alabama counties are equipped with tornado sirens, which sounded Wednesday.

Please keep those families in your prayers at this time for people in Alabama, Georgia and Mississppi.

Arkansas River Mother's Day Caddis Hatch..It's That Time Again!

It's Caddis Time

TEXAS CREEK — Every year for the past oh, 10 years or so; I've made my way down to the Arky for some fun and mostly, the action that finds it's way on this amazing river. There's something about this river that every single person can find to their liking. Whether it's the 40+ mles of access, easy camping spots on the river, rafting access everywhere, local flavor with Salida/Buena Vista, Hatches and fish on the feed! Here's a link from last years trip!

By noon on Monday, sporadic sunshine had warmed up the Arkansas River to 50 degrees as it flowed through Fremont County at Texas Creek. Another two degrees might be all it would take to trigger the fabled spring caddis hatch.

"Maybe," said Taylor Edrington, who co-owns the Royal Gorge Anglers fly shop in CaƱon City with his father, Bill. "But 55 degrees is the money temp."

As a lifelong Arkansas River fisherman working for the oldest outfitter on the river, Edrington has the so-called "Mother's Day Caddis Hatch" down to a science. It's an annual fly-fishing phenomenon pinned to the first weekend of May more for the convenience of fishermen than the actual fishing.

The Eggs Benedict Pattern Makes an Appearance..4 Years n Counting!

The Eggs Benedict Pattern is What To Use Spring and Fall
to keep with the egg theme

No this is not your typical breakfast, this is a gourmet meal coming down the River and very hard to resist!

It was derived from a trip we had 4 years ago (4 year reunion writing about it) to the Grey Reef and some may ask? Did it work? Well, we're still using it and though many Big Trout may get easily confused, a 25" Grey Reef Cutty beast fell victim and it keeps me using it every Spring/Fall until they outlaw it!!

P2172707

What Egg Patterns should you use? Here's a few but my best tip is to use 3 varied colors for that water spread out 12-14" apart. Sizes and colors always change depending upon the spawn cycle, but the result stays the same -Fish On, Now Bring Me Some More Eggs!!

Happy Easter!!

Best Wishes To You

Easter marks the end of Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. The last week of the Lent is called Holy Week, and it contains Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Easter is followed by a fifty-day period called Eastertide or the Easter Season, ending with Pentecost Sunday.

Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox. Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March 20 in most years), and the "Full Moon" is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar whose March 21 corresponds, during the 21st century, to the 3rd of April in the Gregorian Calendar, in which calendar their celebration of Easter therefore varies between April 4 and May 8.

Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In many European languages, the words for "Easter" and "Passover" are etymologically related or homonymous. The term "Pascha", from the same root, is also used in English to refer to Easter.

The Dream Stream Was Not So Dreamy -Wind Alert!!

Wind In South Park....Get Use To It

You know the day is not looking good when you're headed to the Dream Stream and there is a wind alert. Than again most who fish there know that there is a wind alert 340 days a year so it's nothing new. What's a little unexpected is when you're driving by a few semi's that got knocked over into the ditch hours prior due to the wind.....that's never a good thing!

dreamy88The morning stated off not too bad despite "only" having 20mph winds at 8am. We had the place to ourselves, that was a little strange for even a weekday. Now I know why, the low flows and the annual Cutthroat run was at a dead stop seeing how it never happened this year due to low flows. That's the Drem Stream for ya, you may catch it one out of every 5 days days you hit there based on poor flows, terrible weather, massive crowds and lastly, no runs up from the lake by big fish. That's fishing the Dream Stream. I am more of a lake guy so next time I'll come to my senses and just head straight to the lake with my 7wt to chase some iced off fishees!

dreamy77 We managed a few fish but it was really tough work. I gave up after a few hours and just tried to keep my dog from blowing off in the wind. By the time it reached noon the winds had cranked up to what seemed to be 40mph, never a good idea with 3 flies, an indicator, split shot and 6x....tangles are inevitable. Thank goodness I brought my streamer rod to avert anymore frustration.

The ride home was even worse with 3 more Semi's rolled since we drove past earlier that morning! They closed 285 to tankers for good reason, 5 semi's in ditches and one PT Cruiser was slammed off the hill as well. I think next time we'll check more closely to not only the wind reports but the hurricane like wind advisories!

Spring Fishing at Pyramid Lake for Lahontan Cutthroats

Pyramid Lake is On Top Again

It's that time again for Runoff to hit and for me to head to the Lakes! There's something about Stillwater that get's me going each Spring and Summer for some outstanding hatches. Hatches, big fish and perhaps few crowds can be nice especially seeing how runoff can chase everybody off the rivers.

Pyramid Lake is one of those places that's just too good to describe. If you haven't been there than you haven't truly been big fish huntuing in Stillwater. It's not only the food source there that makes this place so special but the size of fish that simply dwarfs most other Lakes around. The guys at "Everything Stillwater" can point you in the right direction and keep you updated as to what's going on at Pyramid Lake.

I'm a huge Stillwater fan most of my fishing buddies can attest to and once ice off happens, guess who's getting ready to take the boat out? Must be to the fact that I'm lucky enough to hangout with guys who keep me updated on top flies and teach me something new each time. All I can think of about are dialing in on the Chironomids, Damsels and Callibaetis hatches this year.

This was shot by my friend Lee from TheFishFly who's there right now

Greenbacks Fundraiser...Denver Flyfishing Films Night Recap! Eastern Rises, Tapam & Low and Clear Movies

Back For More...You Bet!

After attending the Fly Fishing Film tour weeks prior, I got the call and it was time for round two for fly fishing film night. Most importantly because it was a Fundraiser with a purpose, one that I use to be involved in when I was on the board with the Denver Trout Unlimited years prior. The Greenbacks were there to raise money to protect one of Colorado's native fish species. It was a blast catching up with old friend's like Kyle from Compleat Thought , Frank Smethurst -yes Mr. TU on the Rise himself/Eastern Rises star, aka Mark Lance World Traveler/Photographer, Jake Mr. 300 days a year on the water guy, and everyones favorite Dave- GMF!

I got an email from both Daniel Goz & Jan Bach Kristensen of Tapam regarding some prior write up's I did and to hear what they have instore next! All I can say if it's anywhere close to this Film, keep it up. How about jumping out of a Helicopter on top of a Sailfish? Oh wait that's been done sorry~

"I'm so happy to hear the Premiere went well Tradd. I wish so bad I could have made it to Denver. Nothing in the world beats a crowd a fired-up US flyfishergirls and boys. All the best, Daniel.."

Colorado Snowpack for 2011...It's Going To Be One Big Runoff & Wet Wading Is Not Recommended!

Statewide Snowpack Readings

measured in percent of annual averages

This year has been one filled with lot's of powder up in the Hills and lot's of flip flop wearing around the Front Range area due to warmer weather. Every weekend up in the Mountains it's been dumping and dumping snow! Down in Denver it has ranged from 60' at Christmas, 70's in February to 80's in March?? Little strange but I'll take it. Nonetheless we'll have plenty of water pumping out of the Mountains this year and a more than adequate supply of water for our rivers and lakes.

I spoke with Susan Cassel, a BLM director in the Kremmling offices last week regarding runoff and expected river levels ahead for the Spring. She anticipates a great year and they're already bumping up the Blue River from Green Mtn with some incredible flows to make it down the Canyon this Summer and for the Colorado River basin.

Colorado River Water Crisis Averted this Year!

Kara Lamb also from the BLM office sent this to me today:

We plan on spending time in May on the public meeting circuit, sharing our projections for run-off. Last night, we presented our projections for Granby and Willow Creek releases, and a little on Green Mountain, in Granby, Colo. Our next stop will be Tuesday, May 3 at the River District's annual State of the River meeting for the Blue River (including Green Mountain). That will be in Frisco--visit http://www.crwcd.org/page_115 for more information. We might have some other meetings, as well. I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile, if you would like a copy of our presentations, please let me know. Please keep in mind, though, that the data we present at public meetings is all projection and subject to change.

Other Reclamation data on snow pack and reservoir water levels is available at: http://www.usbr.gov/gp/hydromet/curres_google.htm?lat=39.0959&lng=-105.5313&zoom=7 http://www.usbr.gov/gp/lakes_reservoirs/colorado_lakes.htm.

Another Fine Colorado Spring Day Out on The River!

Yes The Big Boys Come Out To Play In The Snow Months

I was able to get out with a Pal the other day and despite snow reports, I was all about hitting the water, escape work on this fine weekday and most of all.....the crowds! Mark definitely got into some pigs and I know he enjoyed hitting a hot spot in South Park he had never visited before. Can't wait to get back~

Not only did the weather cooperate with no snow or rain, temps in the upper 40's, but the fishing wasn't too bad either. The spawn is a ways off but we still managed to get into a few fish and have a great day out.

While most people were at work, we were busy working on some hook ups and midge hatches. Nothing like fishing in the Spring to get you excited about the season ahead. Where to go next weekend? Not sure but I have a few offers for the Gray Reef, Bighorn, Green River and Dream Stream...decisions decisions!

Another Tanker spills 7,000 gallons of fuel into Denver watershed

Here We Go Again

A tanker truck diverted by a road closure crashed last Thursday morning near the town of Jefferson in Park County, spilling an estimated 7,000 gallons of gas and diesel near creeks that flow into Denver's watershed. Park County and Colorado State Patrol crews raced to contain the toxic spill by building a berm.

Denver Water officials were monitoring the damage in a fragile wetlands area known for fine fishing. This happens way too often it seems here in Colorado. Not to thrilled to keep reading about this crap in the news each month!

Caption of The Week...Classic Bonefish Shot!

I'm Outta Here!

My boy Kyle from Compleat Thought was at it again on a recent FIBfest trip to Andros. A collection of bloggers were invited to Andros by way of Deneki Outdoors for a fun filled week of Bonefishing -hey what they heck, where was my invite guys? I'm glad Kyle was able to make it down and get a taste of what Saltwater was like. I'm been telling him for awhile how much different the Saltwater game was. Once you go Salt it grabs ahold of you and never let's you go! Glad you got your first of many bonefish this trip and can't wait to hear about it when you get back. Can't wait to get back again there myself and chase some double digit bones.

What is FIBfest you ask? This week at Andros South they’re hosting a great lineup of folks who write about fishing online. Here’s the plan: they’re all going to go fishing, and write about it online. FIB stands for Fishing Industry Bloggers, and is in no way a reflection of the tendency of anglers to get creative with the truth. Maybe next year I get the call!
