This year, show season kicks off a month early, as the Great Lakes Fly Fishing Show is this weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Then things really get rolling right after the new year in Denver, with The Fly Fishing Show and the International Sportsmen’s Expo on consecutive weekends. Over the next four months, there’s a wide variety of events from Washington to Massachusetts, and from Texas to St. Paul.

Every year, the list changes. Here are the shows on last year’s list about which I could find no information for 2020:

Western Michigan Fly Show

Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association Meeting & Show

The Fly Fishing & Wingshooting Expo

Cheyenne Fly Fishing Expo

Western Maine Fly Fishing Expo

Troutdawghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05785673467710432254noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4822719445254512434.post-6225029668779049252019-03-21T19:59:00.000-06:002019-03-21T19:59:13.177-06:00Top Winter Fly Fishing for Trout Frying Pan and Blue River

PUEBLO — Whether going through withdrawals from the fishing season past, looking ahead to warmer days or merely celebrating the new year, fishermen might consider a quick snack of popcorn trout.

"Yesterday was very similar to today, weather-wise," Alex Zipp, manager of the The Drift Fly Shop (formerly ArkAnglers) in Pueblo, reported Monday morning, not long after nighttime temperatures had plunged well below zero along the Arkansas River in Colorado's old Steel City.
"The afternoon fishing was pretty good, though, from about 1 o'clock to 3. There were midges coming off, and the fish were even coming up for dry flies in the quieter water below rocks. It's been pretty consistent that way."

Indeed, the consistency of winter fishing in the tailwater below Pueblo Dam has become a magnet for fishermen from the entire Front Range and points beyond. "Where else in Colorado can you find fish coming up for dry flies and emergers almost every day throughout the winter?" Zipp asked, accounting for the river's surge of popularity.

Hatches
They are currently in the later stages of aquatic summer insect hatches, and just on the leading edge of terrestrial season. Tricos and callibaetis can be found in many of the lakes and tailwaters right now. PMD's have been out in strong numbers still, as well as some left over yellow sallies

Upper Madison
With the big stonefly hatches mostly over, we are shifting gears towards PMD's, yellow sallies, and early terrestrials such as ants and hoppers. Most of the trout are moving into slightly faster water, seeking more dissolved oxygen as water temperatures rise. Many of the larger trout lately have been in the mid-river shelves or on the faster edges of the seams.

Yellowstone River
After a slightly delayed start to the Yellowstone River fishing season, it is now go time over there. The past couple weeks have provided consistent fishing with a wide variety of fly fishing techniques from dry flies to nymphs, and streamers.

Gallatin
The Gallatin is shaping up nicely right now, and our healthy snow season should keep flows steady all summer long. As a true freestone river, in general the flows will continue to drop all summer long.

What makes it special?
Mysis Relicta is a small freshwater shrimp that fishery managers introduced into reservoirs throughout the west during the 1950s-1970s as a food source for trout and Kokanee (land-locked salmon). The resulting devastation from introducing a non-native, such as the Mysis, was unpredicted. The Mysis fed heavily upon the same zooplankton in the reservoir that juvenile salmon and trout needed as a food source. However, the tailwater section of the river benefited from this misguided management.

Fryingpan Trout:
Trout in the Fryingpan River feed heavily upon the Mysis shrimp that flush through the bottom of the dam. The top two miles flowing out of the reservoir hold the highest numbers of Mysis in the water column, where giant trout swell under the high protein diet and end up looking more like Olympic weightlifters than beaver pond bookies.

Each Spring it seems as if the fishing season comes on fast and for about 4 or 5 months all hell breaks loose and your life is swallowed by demands from work, family, clients, administrative, gear maintenance and last but not least, personal quiet and fun family time (the later two for me are the most important and are essential to getting the others done).

When it all begins to settle in October you come up for air and luckily the best of the season is upon you and you realize how fortunate you are to be deep into a culture and lifestyle that affords you to be on some of the best trout water in the country. I took the season off from writing short blogs and fishing reports this year but I took more photos than I do on average and for me capturing these images from daily adventures is worth a million words. I do hope everyone had a great season and please, if you find yourself on this page/blogsite and like what you see feel free to share as you wish or leave a comment. Enjoy!
Voluntary fishing closure sought at ‘Toilet Bowl’ below Ruedi dam

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is asking anglers to honor a voluntary closure of a popular spot on the Fryingpan River just below Ruedi Reservoir dam.

"The fishing spot — known locally as the 'toilet bowl' — will experience significantly reduced flow as water that normally feeds the pool will be rerouted to facilitate required dam maintenance," a statement from parks and wildlife said.

Work by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is tentatively scheduled to continue until Nov. 10, but the deadline could be extended.
The Bite is Still On!

It's hard to put into words how much fun our trip was recently. Between the gorgeous weather, okay it snowed a few days but it stayed warm enough to stay on the water most days.

What's better, a great day out fishing with friends with no crowds, or a great day out with friends and plenty of fish....how about both?

These hidden lakes kept us busy for most of the week and when not enjoying some Stillwater action, we also hit some local tailwaters for some streamer action!
Annual Fall Rumble Fly Fishing Trip

It's that time of year again where the guys are off on another Fly Fishing Adventure. This Fall is back to a familiar spot that can be good or as fishing goes, very temperamental.

With this amount of water in the region we are fishing at near Yellowstone seems daunting, well daunting in a good way as in too much water to fish. With so many lakes and river close by it's not a question of which lake but better yet...who has the biggest fish this time of year.

In a number of Fly Fish Addiction post on the way, I'll let you decide on how well our 8 day adventure went!
