New Zealand is known for its stunning brown trout, but the beast that angler Otwin Kandolf caught last week won't be winning any beauty contests. (I had to check to make sure this story wasn't a joke. "Otwin Kandolf" sounds like a Lord of the Rings character, doesn't it?)

The Ohau B hydro canal in South Canterbury is near enough to a salmon farm that the trout grow fat on pellets, and it has been known to yield fat trout. Kandolf spotted the fish, and immediately divined its aesthetic shortcomings:


"I just looked at the fish and saw how ugly it was; it’s not a nice-looking fish," he said of his prized catch.

Handsome or not, the thing was obviously huge, so Kandolf threw a lure at it. After a 15-minute fight, he had it to hand. When he finally got it to a certified scale at a butcher shop, it weighed in at 42 pounds, 1 ounce. That's three pounds short of the world record, but tops the previous New Zealand record by more than two pounds.

Antero Reservoir Draining It's Water Again...Fish Future Unknown?

FRISCO — Denver Water says it will save some 4,000 acre feet of water by completely draining Antero Reservoir in anticipation of drought conditions. The Park County reservoir was created in 1909 by the first dam ever built on the South Platte River.

“We’re exploring as many ways as possible to be efficient with our water supply,” said Dave Bennett, water resource manager for Denver Water. “Antero is a drought reservoir designed to provide water to our customers during a severe drought. Moving water from Antero to Cheesman will allow us to make the water available for our customers and reduce evaporation losses to our system.”

Fly Fishing The San Juan River Early Spring

The Colder and Snowier the Juan is, The Better it Fishes!

The San Juan River is a fishery that everyone should experience. It is world renowned as one of the greatest tailwater trout fisheries there is. In the top 4 miles of river below the dam, there are over 20,000 fish per mile, averaging 17 inches in length; you couldn't ask for more.

Most of the fish are rainbows but the population of browns seems to be increasing. It is primarily a small fly fishery with size #20 to #26 midges on light tippet being the standard setup. It is quite a thrill to hook and land a large fish on this type of gear. The river is big by New Mexico standards but very easy to wade and, with the density of fish being so great, long casts are not usually necessary. We do both float trips (fishing from a drift boat) and wade trips on the San Juan. Fishing from the boat enables you to fish many spots you are unable to wade to.

Fishing on the San Juan is excellent at any time of year. There are often many other fishermen on the river but because it is so large, you can always find a good spot of your own. The one drawback to fishing the San Juan is that it is not close to anywhere so it makes for a very long daytrip. If you can do it, we would encourage booking at least an overnight trip.
