Never Too Young To Fish!

It Won't Be Long

I took the little guy to the mall recently and his attention was directed to a Sporting good store, that's my guy. Than as we made our way through the store, he headed right for fishing and picked out some new waders!

I think it may be a while before he can fit into one of these but I may pick him up a tiny reel and rod, hey just in case we hit some water next spring right?

Can't wait to get him out next year for some fun and fishing. In the meantime he was also enjoying some Halloween parties and attention he got from his outfit recently.

Florida Keys and National Parks are Back Open...Finally!!!!!!!!!!!

FLORIDA KEYS (Oct. 17, 2013) — Portions of Everglades National Park reopened Thursday shortly after President Obama signed a bipartisan measure to end a 16-day partial government shutdown.

Superintendent Dan Kimball emailed most of some 350 commercial use authorization permit holders informing them he had received a directive from the National Park Service regional office to begin an orderly opening of the park.

Kimball immediately opened areas of Everglades National Park — including Florida Bay — that are not dependent on the reopening of facilities or return of furloughed staff.

The measure means Florida Keys fishing guides and others who were shut out of Florida Bay for 16 days can return.

Florida Bay represents about a third of the 2,380-square-mile park.

Kimball said early Thursday he expects Everglades National Park to be fully open by Friday morning and Dry Tortugas National Park should be fully operational by this afternoon.

Colorado Floods The Aftermath!

More Issues

The number of gallons of oil that spilled into Colorado's rivers and their immediate surroundings due to the massive flooding has reached 37,000. There have been 11 oil spills from wells, which belong to companies such as Noble Energy and Andarko Petroleum Corp. While the narrative presented by the Colorado energy sector has been optimistic, locals are telling a different story filled with instances of heavy contamination and the need to address climate change seriously and immediately.

Flooding has triggered the oil spills that have now made their way into Colorado rivers. However, lost in the barrage of statistics are the more personal stories of Colorado residents' firsthand accounts of the damage. The Denver Post interviewed Mike Turner, a local farmer who ignored evacuation orders to look after his land. Turner watched as flood waters inundated an oil drilling operation on his property, and witnessed the crude leak.

While the degree to which the floods themselves can be explained by climate change is debatable, there is a sentiment that the global trend of climate change plays a part in this story. Climate Central has referred to Colorado as state that could experience the extreme effects of climate change due to its location on the dividing line between regions that will experience intense flooding and intense drought. The state has experienced such floods as well as fires in the past. And if those reports are to be believed, crude oil drilling and the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking) cannot be helping

Bighorn River September Fly Fishing Tips

Bighorn River September Fishing
Article Link

While fall has officially arrived, it certainly doesn’t feel like it out there yet with temp’s in the 80′s today. The river is in the best shape for fall the we have seen in a few years. The emergence of insects have been particularly strong for this stage of the season. If the weather stays consistent we should expect more of the same strong hatches of tricos and pseudos.

The nymph fishing should remain good with small sowbugs, Size 20 & 22 mayfly nymph imitations along with midge pupa. Look for the browns and rainbows to become more aggressive each day towards well fished streamer imitations.

Flowing through the Bighorn Mountains and miles of limestone formations, the Bighorn boasts an incredible insect population which allows and incredible 7,000 trout per river mile to flourish. The Bighorn is a very consistent fishery as a result of the moderating effects that the Yellowtail Dam has on water temperature and flow. High or low water may affect your fishing techniques but not the quality of the fishing.

September is our favorite time on the "Horn" with spectacular hatches of Tricos bringing almost every fish to the surface...and talk about exciting! You haven't lived until you have hooked a 20" trout on 6x tippet with a #18 dry fly. Excellent fishing to the Trico hatch lasts most of the morning with strong caddis hatches going well into the evening. It is an unbelievable sight to see hundreds of feeding fish throughout your three days of floating.

Most of the land surrounding the Bighorn is owned by the Crow Indian Tribe so foot access is limited so the best way to fishing it is by drift boat. Your trip includes five days of floating with local Bighorn guides. All flies on your float trips are supplied and included. We can prepare fly selections in case you would like to be sure that you have the necessities. A small fly shop is located at the cabins for any last minute purchases. Guide Gratuities are not included in the package price.
