Wild Atlantic salmon found in New York Salmon River for first time in more than a century

More From Midcurrent

Here's one for the optimists. A shift in balance toward native prey species as a food source may make it possible for wild salmon to populate the Salmon river for the first time in over 100 years. Invasive alewives -- which destroy a key chemical in Atlantic salmon -- have been on the decline. "This is the first time in more than a century that salmon produced naturally in the wild have been found in what was once New York's premier salmon stream. Forty-one wild Atlantic salmon were collected in June and July. All of the salmon were under one year old and ranged in length from about 2 - 2.5 inches." David Figura on Syracuse.com.

Colorado Summertime Dry Fly Action

Eagle County Fishing Weekend
Link to our trip & more pictures

My Fishing pal Dave finally got to get out for a weekend on the water after taking some time off and the weekend didn't disappoint! Steve and his dog sushi also joined us and joined the fun. We fished some small water away from the crowds up in the Hills and besides having decent days out, the peace and quiet paid off in dividends much more so.

lost a big one2
Just pulled it from a Beaaaast!

We found a camping spot that Friday and pretty much had the area to ourselves the entire weekend. Not only was the camping area nice but it was also a few feet from the River so even better for us and the dogs. Friday was a bit slow but Sat showed to be a bit better, it must have been the Karma Steve brought with him that day. The area we fished is near a somewhat popular area but due to me knowing a few guides in the area over the years paid off and we had another area to ourselves for the entire day again. Flies of choice varied but we had most of our success on Stimulator's, swing caddis, very tiny emerger patterns and FBPT's!

makers3
Great way to finish the night, or in this case into the morning. Great shot Steve

We had a very late night the last night we were there due to a nice dinner, band playing and a never ending supply of firewood there were quite a few fish stories to talk about. Great day of fishing and evening but it was time to spend out last day on another section of water in the Eagle county valley. This day proved to be a bit more crowded and it showed from the Mono found in the parking area as well as hole hopping around people. No complaints though when I got a sweet 16" brown on my 2nd cast of the day on a tandem dry rig (Stimy /Foam EHC). The rest of the day we had success on other dry fly's, small emerger patterns and caddis pupa.

A large percentage of Fly Fisherman out there owns a 4 legged fishing partner and the thought of something happening to them makes anyone of us a little disturbed. What most people out there don't realize or pretend not to focus on is the sector of society where there is an ongoing battle against not only abuse, but also abandonement with Fidos. This is not a rant in anyway but merely a subtle reminder of what exist out there and a little awareness.

There are thousands of Pet's out there that enjoy a good life but there is also a few that aren't so lucky. One Organization that has done an amazing job for the support of of the less fortunate is the Best Friends Organization.

Best Friends Animal Society is a 25 year old nonprofit, membership organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are No More Homeless Pets. The society’s leading initiatives in animal care and community programs are coordinated from its Kanab, Utah, headquarters, the country’s largest no-kill sanctuary. One story that is encouraging and shows progress of not only her former fighting years, but also a dog that was given a 2nd chance and shows that this breed is not as bad as the experts claim them to be. Georgia is truly one sweet rehabilitated dog that continues to show what a little time and effort can do.

Some of you know that I am in the Pet Industry and care deeply about our Pet's and what happens to them be it through volunteer shelters, preventative cancer programs, Pet Training, or Pet Organizations.Morris Animal Foundation helps animals enjoy longer, healthier lives. We advance health and welfare research that protects, treats and cures companion animals, horses and wildlife worldwide.

Here is a new Pet in the FFA family named Boca, she was rescued from a local dog park that was abandoned and now is living large with weekend trips to the Mtns chasing trout.

This thread is not geared towards the idiot Michael Vick at all, this is geared towards Pet's of today and the care needed to protect them against ongoing issues. I promise to start talking fishing again and this was my token Pet Thread for awhile.

Presidents On The Fly!

Obama On The Gallatin
Cartoon Link

BELGRADE, Mont. (Aug. 15) -
Moving beyond his usual sporting pursuits of basketball and golf, the U.S. president took advantage of his trip to Montana’s Big Sky country on Friday to try his hand at the Western pastime of fly fishing. His original plan for a 30-minute helicopter ride to a fishing spot at the O’Dell Creek Ranch was nixed by rainy weather. The Sweetwater Guides from Livingston definitely did a great job and "I found him to be a real good listener," said Vermillion, who runs the Sweetwater Fly Shop in Livingston. "He really wanted to learn about the whole experience of fly fishing."

On The Econimic Stimulus For National Parks Link
President Obama's $787 billion economic stimulus plan passed in February and designated $750 million dollars to the national parks. But not all of the stimulus money is being used -- and the parks are facing a $9 billion backlog in maintenance projects. So far, nearly 10 percent is in the pipeline. "We are picking away at it as much as we can and we've been fortunate to have the recovery act money," said Jeffrey Olson of the National Park Service.

Past Presidents that Fly Fished, yes there have been a few. President Bush Sr. also enjoyed many day's out on the water whether fishng for Tarpon in the Keys, Stripers in Kennebunkport.
Vice President Dick Cheney loved to spend weeks in Jackson Hole and Montana each Summer as well chasing fat rainbows and Yellowstone Cuttroats. Other Presidents you may have not known about: Jimmy Carter, Hebert Hoover, and Grover Cleveland were each fly fishing enthusiasts –more so than any other U.S. presidents. Theodore Roosevelt also brought attention to the sport after spending so much time out with Herbert Hoover in the Shenandoah National Park.

Our views on Politics are that any President or VP that brings awareness to fly fishing is never a bad thing, I hope you don't mind a thread that contains Political involvement regarding Environmental issues & Recreation

Easiest Knots For Fly Fishing, Yes There Are A Few

Knots, Knots and More Knots!

Knots are one of the most important variables when it comes to fly fishing ask anyone. When I first started this sport of ours some 18 years ago, I hadn't a clue about what knots to tie on my fly, let alone knots to my leader. I remember a buddy who helped me along during my days at Yellowstone always said, "I think you might need to add more tippet and tie on another section, that 4 feet leader aint going to cut it" I just looked and said do you mind?

Over the years I've gotten much better despite a few bruisers that get me scratching my head every year after a break off going, what the heck was I thinking tying that crappy knot! When it comes to Saltwater and all the knots used it is a learning process somewhat. Yes, I can tie up leaders for most targeted species I go after, but when in doubt I'm not too bashful about asking my Salt guide to double check my boy scout square knots to make sure they'll work. I've learned my lesson over the years from fishing that no matter how well you think you tied it, you better double check...better safe than sorry and why chance it!

fishing_knots_lefty_kreh

Everyone it seems to have a favorite knot, whether to their backing, fly line-leader, tippet sections or to the fly, that will always vary. If you get around 5 Saltwater guides get ready for a real debate about what they use as well. When building Salt leaders and involving shock leader sections, everyone I've heard has a very different opinion, all staying consistent to the norm for leaders and all work accordingly, it just depends on each person. Just like when I go out I have my system and my fishing pals have their own.

There are a range of fly fishing knots available to use for every purpose. Some knots are very easy to learn and some are very complicated, so if you're a beginner you don't need the more difficult ones. Basically, there is an easy knot available for just about any fly fishing application: reel to your backing, backing to your line, line to your leader, leader to your tippet, and tippet to fly. Most of the easier fly fishing knots still retain more than 90% of line strength, provided they are tied accordingly and moistened with water or saliva before the final tightening. Practice your knots over and over until you can do them with your eyes closed. Sometimes you will need to tie them in the dark. When you start reeling in big heavy fighting fish, you can start practicing the more complicated knots. In my opinion, the fewer knots you have to use, the better.

For your own opinion, take a look below and see what you think, I'm sure you'll find a few to try out on your next day out on the water!

Toughest Fish To Catch on a Fly!

The Results Are In

What is the toughest fish to catch on a fly you ask? This can and will be talked about at great lengths each time I get together with a few fishing buddies. I think everyone has a fish they've always dreamed about or is currently seeking to land after repeat trips to favorite destinations and some mucho dinero.

My choice is a Big Tarpon hands down. Big Permit are very elusive, extremely challenging, one needs about 30 variables to go your way, but big permit just fall a little to a monster Tarpon. I can speak from experience and close call but Permit are just fall short of a big Tarpon on a fly. I have hooked or landed 4 of the 5 listed with a recent trip to Florida where I got worked over by a 140lb Silver king...ouch!! It still haunts me weekly but when I look back at the thrill I experienced from the chase, cast, hookset and fight...I want it even more now!

The Results were pretty close and just as you would have suspected a 10lb Permit and a 100lb Tarpon lead the rankings. Anyone can, -after a few attempts, land a juvy Tarpon or baby permit with some decent guiding and luck. Bonefish, in smaller sizes, are also landed fairly easy in many part of the globe like Turneffe Flats and Andros.

permy

To catch a medium to large size Permit on a fly, sorry shrimp chuckers and artificial guys you don't count in this poll, can be one long journey year in year out. A hundred pound Tarpon can be equally as difficult if not more so. "Statistics claim that to hook a 100lb Tarpon is a 1 in 100 chance, to land this beast is a one in a 1,000!"

Mind you that Steelhead, Musky, big Carp and even Taimen are always at the top as well, but they just didn't cut it in this poll. I would feel humbled by any of these listed so that's what keeps most of us going in the sport it seems. It's thrilling, never easy and something to tweak those skills on each time out on the water. Good luck with your chase and let us know what your favorite might be.

10lb Permit

Steelhead
6 (14%)

Musky

100lb Tarpon

Western Mayfly Hatches, Boy Do I Love Em!

It doesn't matter what part of the country you live in, there is more than likely a river nearby that offers quality mayfly hatches in June, July and August. Whether you fish water on the East coast or Mid Western states like Montana, I can almost guarantee there to be a species of the Ephemerellidae family flying around. What species type is another question but here in the Midwest there are 4 prominent species commonly called blue-winged olives to name a few.

For Colorado, The Colorado River has a large abundance of hatches to admire. Mayflies, stoneflies, and caddis are all found in large numbers. Pale morning duns, BWO's and tricos make up most of the mayfly hatches and keep the summer fisherman coming back for more each Summer. The spring Blue-winged Olive hatch on Utah's Green River may be one of the best match-the-hatch dry-fly experiences in the world. The #16-20 mayflies hatch from late March to the first week of May.

What about the Yellowstone Area you ask? Large amounts of Mayflies can be found just about every month in the Yellowstone area. Most of the Mayflies are particularly in large volumes from May through October and are an important food source for trout during this time period. Mayflies are the reason many of the abundant fly fishing opportunities arise during the Summer and late season.

Top Western hatch chart listings are always helpful,I can attest with my fishing book which has about 60 for just about every popular river in the states I've collected. Orvis has nice Hatch Chart as well as the go to Trout site Troutnut.

Looking for books on Top Western Hatches? We also have quite a few listings to help assist you in your search for Mayfly's. I know I've enjoyed many of these books over the past in my library but still anemic when it comes to the newer books out there so I need to get on the ball. Let us know if you have other books out there that we have not listed.

Georgia Trout Streams, Fly Hatches and More!

North Georgia Trout, Man do I miss Them!

What is it about North Georgia's trout streams that draws thousands of anglers each weekend to some of the South's most popular rivers? It could be the fact that Georgia has over 4,000 miles of Trout stream water and I can honestly say that during my days at UGA and living in Atlanta, I fished a great deal of them! Whether it was my personal favorite of the Chattooga, Dicks Creek, Toccoa or the Chattahooooooooochee. I now live in Denver and the closest trout water is around 30 minutes yet I could drive only 15 minutes to a local trout spot when I lived in Atl, that seems wild but true!

For the Top Trout Streams in Georgia look no further, checkout this site for the Top 10 sites to fish in Georgia and information on how to fish them. Also for the latest in Hatch reports can help find out what's flying around you and what to throw. With so much water to fish, water flows that change each day due to rainshowers -or lack there of as of late, and most importantly where the crowds won't be, the information listed here will hopefully make your day out a bit better.

gafalls

Georgia's DNR has really done a ton to help improve the trout habitat in the state of Georgia and to revive areas that were in danger to a healthy trout population. For updated news on updated stocking reports, delayed harvest waters, seasons, fishing reports and more! Georgia's Dept or Natural Resources has every trout fisherman's answer to catching nore trout and recent fishing reports. Also some additional resources that I've been fortunate enough to attend include the Georgia Trout Unlimited Council, Atlanta Fly Fishing Club, and I lived a few blocks away from Atlanta's go to Fly shop that needs no introduction The Fish Hawk.

Summer Float Fishing Weekend!

Road Trip Season, Time To Head Out Of The Region for some Float Fishing!

Summer means one thing for a Fly Fisherman, road trips and sweet action on the dry! After a long drive, it was finally time to get a taste of the water we've been waiting so long to get on. Did it disappoint you'll have to click on our trip report to see how much fun we had.

Link To Our Trip Here

2 Days of Rowing, dry fly action, no crowds and plenty of Fish! Boca had her first float experience and did well seeing how there's nothing over a Class II rapid here. We were able to just drift about 10 miles a day before making our way to Chief Pine camping area. Water levels also played an important part of this trip with water running between 3-400 it was perfect for float fishing.

Can't wait to get back up or down that way again -depending on which direction you're looking

Fishing Bozeman, Missoula & The Billings Area For Trout, Recent Fishing Reports

Recent Fishing Reports From Buddies Around Montana

What happens when I get about 4 emails in a week from friends that have been fishing some of Montana's Top fishing streams? Well I guess I have to endure more torture buy showcasing how well they've been doing! Thanks guys for rubbing it in and having such great days out. Yeah, after 4 invites so far this Summer to head out that way to fish, I may have to delay it until next Summer darn it! Can't do it all and especially with another Big trip right around the corner. After a few trips up that way in the last few years and catching some huge rainbows on the Mad, 2010 will have to wait!

martin-missoulamartin2
Martin having one of those days out near some Missoula Water, sorry to bail on you again this Fall for my trip, next year will happen Fo Show and keep that guest room open for me
