Montana Summer Fishing Reports

Hatches
They are currently in the later stages of aquatic summer insect hatches, and just on the leading edge of terrestrial season. Tricos and callibaetis can be found in many of the lakes and tailwaters right now. PMD's have been out in strong numbers still, as well as some left over yellow sallies


Upper Madison
With the big stonefly hatches mostly over, we are shifting gears towards PMD's, yellow sallies, and early terrestrials such as ants and hoppers. Most of the trout are moving into slightly faster water, seeking more dissolved oxygen as water temperatures rise. Many of the larger trout lately have been in the mid-river shelves or on the faster edges of the seams.

Yellowstone River
After a slightly delayed start to the Yellowstone River fishing season, it is now go time over there. The past couple weeks have provided consistent fishing with a wide variety of fly fishing techniques from dry flies to nymphs, and streamers.

Gallatin
The Gallatin is shaping up nicely right now, and our healthy snow season should keep flows steady all summer long. As a true freestone river, in general the flows will continue to drop all summer long.

Montana Big Brown Trout Strike Again!

Butte man lands Big Hole lunker Monster brown

Bob Kingston and Gary Keeler of Butte bought their first raft as teenagers and have been floating the Big Hole River ever since.Now in their mid-50s, the longtime fishing buddies have their best fishing story yet.On Friday evening, Kingston caught what appears to be the elusive, monster brown trout that has been the talk of many area anglers in recent years.The beast measured 35 inches and made its way to the raft cooler following a roughly 30-minute battle between man and fish, said Kingston, who is having the trout mounted. The fish weighed slightly over 20 pounds after it was wrapped in a damp towel in preparation for the taxidermist."He just kept going wherever he wanted," he said of the fight.Kingston caught the fish with a five-weight fly rod rigged with eight-pound leader and two stonefly nymphs above Mallon's, west of Wise River, after launching from East Bank. "I was just throwing my fly right by the bank and it gobbled it up," he said.

I had the invite, The fishing has been great, The weather was perfect, I have the flies, What happened? Well that thing called work got in the way of me going with some friends for a fun week on the Bighorn River!

Now I'm hearing about it, after my fishing pal Brian Yamauchi returned from another great trip to the Horn the pictures are flowing in like a massive midge hatch, Thanks Brian :)

Maybe I can join you and friends like Rick Takahashi for some fun on the river and relaxing for a few days instead of working, until next time!
