The Dream Stream Was Not So Dreamy -Wind Alert!!

Wind In South Park....Get Use To It

You know the day is not looking good when you're headed to the Dream Stream and there is a wind alert. Than again most who fish there know that there is a wind alert 340 days a year so it's nothing new. What's a little unexpected is when you're driving by a few semi's that got knocked over into the ditch hours prior due to the wind.....that's never a good thing!

dreamy88The morning stated off not too bad despite "only" having 20mph winds at 8am. We had the place to ourselves, that was a little strange for even a weekday. Now I know why, the low flows and the annual Cutthroat run was at a dead stop seeing how it never happened this year due to low flows. That's the Drem Stream for ya, you may catch it one out of every 5 days days you hit there based on poor flows, terrible weather, massive crowds and lastly, no runs up from the lake by big fish. That's fishing the Dream Stream. I am more of a lake guy so next time I'll come to my senses and just head straight to the lake with my 7wt to chase some iced off fishees!

dreamy77 We managed a few fish but it was really tough work. I gave up after a few hours and just tried to keep my dog from blowing off in the wind. By the time it reached noon the winds had cranked up to what seemed to be 40mph, never a good idea with 3 flies, an indicator, split shot and 6x....tangles are inevitable. Thank goodness I brought my streamer rod to avert anymore frustration.

The ride home was even worse with 3 more Semi's rolled since we drove past earlier that morning! They closed 285 to tankers for good reason, 5 semi's in ditches and one PT Cruiser was slammed off the hill as well. I think next time we'll check more closely to not only the wind reports but the hurricane like wind advisories!

South Park Fishing...Expect The Unexpected

Fall Fishing in South Park

It's another Fall day in South Park aka fishing the Dream on a weekend and what do I get? I got the unexpected with 68' weather, no wind and sunshine all day! What's wrong with this picture? Well a bunch if you've never fished here, this place tortures all from crazy wind storms, insane crowds, bad flows, picky trout and normally snow storms this time of year. I got the opposite from gorgeous weather and few crowds to some nice fish. Every Fall on the Dream Stream can be bring many surprises from my whiteout last year to big Browns years before, one never knows what to expect. The big browns were mostly gone due to it being a few weeks after but plenty of other trout to keep me entertained. I do prefer cloudy, light winds to bring out the big boys but who can complain on a day like this.

Start the day off with a few Rainbows, cutthroats, brownies and Salmon...hmm that could almost count as a partial grand slam since pike were elusive this day!

Early bird gets the worm. Yep 1st one there and nothing like getting to an empty parking lot at 6:20am and easy pickens for all my hotspots.

Cutthroats were stacked in there today and they seemed to be all around the Kokanee's and eager to take some eggs as well as dry fly's once the hatch began. Biggest fish of the day was a 22" brown trout, where's the picture you ask? SDR is what happened, yes I decided to release it right at my net, yep a break off right on the edge. Oh well a fun fight nonetheless.

The perfect place to spend a Fall morning and better yet the place to have for yourself an hour before the crowds started kicking up dust.

One sexy Papa, they can be fun to catch but I prefer to catch the Trout species, must be from all the Salmon caught in Alaska and not wanting to keep changing up my tippet due to those fine teeth!

Boca ready for the ride! Long day of fishing and chasing chipmunks. One tired pup right there

Tips for Fishing The Dream Stream
The Good
-Big fish and a variety of fish species to target
-Great hatches
-If the River isn't fishing well hit the lakes or 11 mile canyon
-If you want to be up and close with horses, Buffalo's and Donkeys, this is your place
-Easy access areas 3 1/2 miles worth
The Bad
-Crowds, crowds and more crowds
-If you don't get crowded in your hole, your spot targeted by others, people up from you, down from you and walking by it's a good day
-If you don't get 40mph winds it's a good day
-If you don't get snowed on (till June and starts in Sept)it's a good day
-The flows seem to always be off
-Tough fishing for big fish, sight fishing can be brutal
-Did I mention the crowds again?

Antero Reservoir Fishing is Open! Why Are There So Many Cars & People?

Antero Reservoir is Back and So Are The Big Fish/Crowds

The reports are out and everyone in Colorado has seen the news, Antero has opened and so have the crowds! I had a chance to fish Antero this weekend but plans changed work was calling and I had to bail!

For those who have counted down the days, it's finally here so grab your boats and head to the lakes with a few thousand of your not so closest friends. Antero Reservoir is a great fishery and everyone in a tri-state area knows that so prepare yourself for another South Park welcome when heading this way.

Best Local Tips
Big fish available? You bet if you're lucky enough
Plenty of crowds there? You better believe it, prepare for the lines
Bad weather to fish in? That's it and 40mph windy days expected
Callibaetis? Doubt it you're a bit early try some Chironomids
Boat or Land? Boat if you like fighting the wind, land if you like a shorter distance to your car to run back to when it turns South
Tips on how to fish it? Look for a baitchucker with a stringer of fish, than you know you've gone to far, turn around immediately and run

Dream Stream Fishing For Big Fish!

Big Browns on the Dream Stream
After many said I was crazy for going fishing on the Dream when it was suppose to rain, snow, stay windy and of all things crowded.....I went!

spawning brown trout

What did I encounter, no rain, no snow, few crowds due to the Broncos game, and blue sky weather all day. I think the only downfall of the day was that I went to bed at 12:30 and awoke at 4:30 for a quick trip to South Park .

When I got there I only noticed one vehicle in the parking lot, that was definitely a good sign of things to come. I fished the lower part towards 11 mile Rez, the most people I ran into were 3 others for the 1st half of the day.

The fishing started off a bit slow but than picked up when I was able to get a 21" Cutty to take my sparkle winged RS2, crazy fight that was. After that nothing but dinks rising all over and after a few I grew tired of that and went in search of big fish.

I did notice lot's of Rainbows in spawn mode and plenty of bows paired up so that's always strange to see in the Fall. The wind picked up a bunch and after a few tangles it was time for the streamer rod and a drive over to the upper section. About 6 cars in the middle lot of the upper section so I was ready for a few more people. I fished a few holes caught a few more dinks and noticed some bigger fish in an upper hole. I was all over it! Still slinging my streamers out I got the tug and wham, off to the races. Long story short I was able to net this sweet brown and pure redemption from the Big fish I lost this past Spring. It definitely had been beaten up a bit and I was only able to take a few pics since I didn't want to do more harm. Funny thing is you never have that money shot you always want when there's no one to help take the pictures for you, they never look as big as they really are! A long day of fishing came to a close and I was done for the day after that. Though plenty of fish were stull rising as I walked away I called it a day and headed home on this amazing Fall day in South Park.
